And the single detail people get wrong most often is the vent: specifically, undersized vent piping on an indoor install. Check those two areas first and you'll clear the majority of calls.

Lock-up failure

Symptom: The 496 won't hold pressure at no-flow — when demand drops to zero, the outlet doesn't settle and stay put. The regulator isn't shutting off completely.

Causes on a 496: Lock-up fails when the valve pad (seat) doesn't make a firm seal against the orifice. That comes from a dent on the orifice edge, damage to the seat, or debris, pipe dope, or lubricant sitting between the two.

Field check: Run the lock-up test to confirm it isn't sealing — establish flow, close a downstream valve, and watch the outlet. Full procedure in our lock-up pressure guide. Then pull and inspect the seat and orifice: look for dents on the orifice edge, damage to the seat, and any contamination.

Fix: If it's debris, pipe dope, or lubricant, clean the seat and orifice and retest — often that's the whole fix. If either part is dented or damaged, replace it; both are field-replaceable.

Replace threshold: If the 496 still won't lock up after the seat and orifice are clean or new, the problem is deeper — replace the unit. On a regulator this inexpensive, that's frequently the call anyway.

Creep

What it looks like on a 496: Outlet pressure slowly climbing when it shouldn't — the same family of behavior as a lock-up problem, which is why the two often trace to the same part (more on that below). Don't confuse it with droop: creep is the outlet rising at no-flow; droop is the outlet sagging under heavy demand. Opposite symptoms, different causes.

Root causes: Two things to check — the seat and orifice (debris, pipe dope, lubricant, or damage, the same culprit as lock-up), and the diaphragm (a tear lets pressure through). One thing it usually is not: a "worn" spring. Springs don't fatigue in normal service, so creep is not a reason to chase the spring.

How to confirm: Inspect the diaphragm for tears, and inspect the seat and orifice for debris, pipe dope, or lubricant. Between those two checks you'll have your answer.

Fix: Clean or replace the seat and orifice as needed. If the diaphragm is torn, that's a diaphragm replacement — and given how inexpensive a 496 is, most techs simply replace the regulator at that point.

Vent issues

Causes on a 496: Two show up most. Either the vent is clogged, or the vent piping is too small on an indoor install.

The sizing rule: Use the vent connection size or larger, then step up one nominal pipe size for every 20 feet of run. A long indoor run on minimum-size pipe is the classic miss.

Most misdiagnosed: Of the three themes in this guide, undersized vent piping is the one customers get wrong most — and they'll often chase other fixes before they check it. Verify vent sizing early, before you start swapping parts.

Why it matters: A blocked or undersized vent keeps the regulator from sensing and responding to downstream pressure properly. It's also the escape path if the diaphragm fails — so a compromised vent isn't just a performance issue, it undermines a safety function. Treat it as more than a nuisance.

How the three connect

The seat and orifice are the shared root of both lock-up failure and creep. One damaged or contaminated seat can show up as a regulator that won't lock up and as outlet creep at the same time. So if the seat and orifice check out clean, don't stop before you've checked the vent, and check its size, not just whether it's clear.

When to stop troubleshooting and isolate

Some conditions are not a diagnose-and-continue situation:

  • An uncontrolled gas leak means isolate first, then replace. Don't keep working a live leak.

  • Downstream overpressure you can't bring under control. If the outlet is climbing and you're not certain the relief is doing its job, isolate and protect the downstream equipment before anything else.

  • Anything you can't confidently identify. If the 496's behavior doesn't match a known cause, isolate and call our applications team rather than guess. On a live gas service, the safe direction is always "stop and confirm."
