This is a complete, sequenced install checklist for a 143 or 496 service regulator — from what you load on the truck to the moment you sign the set off. Work it start to finish or hand it to a tech. The order matters; each block sets up the next, and the last three steps (set the outlet, test lock-up, test for leaks) are the ones you never eyeball.

1. Before you go

Load out for the whole job, not half of it. You'll want:

  • The right unit — a 143 or 496 matched to the application.

  • The spring sized to your required outlet pressure, and the orifice sized to your inlet pressure and load. Confirm both against our sizing guides before you leave.

  • Vent piping and termination hardware for the install type (indoor vs. outdoor).

  • Wrenches and hand tools for the connections.

  • Leak-detection — solution or an electronic detector.

  • A manometer or test gauge to set the outlet pressure and run the lock-up test.

2. Pre-install verification at the set

Before anything gets made up:

  • Confirm the inlet pressure is within the orifice's maximum rating. If the inlet exceeds what the orifice can hold, stop and re-spec.

  • Find the flow arrow cast into the body and confirm which way gas runs through the set — you'll install to match it.

  • Confirm clearances and vent routing against the regulator's installation instructions and your AHJ. Clearance specifics are model- and jurisdiction-specific, so check the document rather than eyeballing it.

3. Mechanical install, in sequence

  • Position the regulator so the body's flow arrow matches the direction of gas flow. Installing it backwards is the single most common install miss that comes back as a callback. (For the wider set, see our meter set assembly best practices.)

  • Make up the connections. Keep pipe dope and thread sealant off the seat and orifice and out of the gas path — sealant that migrates onto the seat is a known cause of lock-up failure.

  • Support the piping so the regulator isn't carrying pipe strain.

4. Vent and termination, done right

The vent is where install misses turn into callbacks. Get it right the first time:

  • Outdoors: point the vent down. A vent that isn't pointed down collects debris and water and clogs — a documented callback cause.

  • Indoors: vent to the outside. Size the vent connection size or larger, stepping up one nominal pipe size for every 20 feet of run. Undersized vent lines are one of the most common indoor misses.

  • Confirm the device actually needs a vent line the way you're running it. The 143 and 496 are vented regulators, not vent-limited — see our vent-limited regulators explainer if you're weighing a no-vent-line device.

5. Leak test

With the set pressurized:

  • Leak-check every joint with solution or an electronic detector.

  • Run your utility's pressure/hold test on the piping.

This is one of the two steps crews rush most. Skipping it means gas loss — and a leak you didn't find at install is a leak someone finds later.

6. Commissioning: set the outlet, confirm lock-up

Now prove the regulator does its job:

  • Establish flow, then set the outlet pressure to your setpoint by adjusting the spring. Confirm it holds at setpoint with gas flowing.

  • Test for lock-up: with gas flowing downstream, close the downstream valve and watch the downstream pressure rise. It should settle at a pressure slightly above your setpoint. If it doesn't settle — if it keeps climbing — the regulator isn't locking up.

7. Record and sign off

Before you leave, write down what you set and verified:

  • The unit, spring, and orifice installed.

  • The outlet pressure setpoint.

  • The lock-up result — that it settled, and where.

  • The leak-test result.

  • The date, and who commissioned the set.

8. The misses that cause callbacks

If a set comes back, it's usually one of three things — all of them prevented by the steps above:

  • The body installed backwards, with the flow arrow ignored.

  • The vent not pointed down, so it clogged.

  • The vent line undersized on an indoor run.

None of these are subtle once you know to look for them, which is exactly why they belong on a checklist.

Work the blocks in order and the set commissions itself: right parts, right direction, right vent, tight joints, correct outlet, confirmed lock-up. The three you never eyeball — set the outlet, test lock-up, test for leaks — are the difference between a set that's done and a set that's coming back.
